Cannabidiol (Can-na-bi-di-ol) or CBD is a chemical found in the Cannabis sativa plant, also known as marijuana or hemp. Over 80 chemicals, known as cannabinoids, have been identified in the Cannabis sativa plant. While delta-9-tetrahydocannabinol (THC) is the major active ingredient in marijuana, cannabidiol is the major ingredient in hemp. Hemp contains less than 0.3% of THC. Because there is very little THC in the hemp-derived CBD, there is no psycho activity when consuming CBD products.
THC affects the brain by binding to naturally-occurring CB1 receptors in the central nervous system. CBD is a differently-shaped molecule that binds to CB2 receptors in cell and body tissues outside the central nervous system.
Most CBD products are taken orally via oil drops that are placed under the tongue and held for 60 seconds before swallowing. Topical creams and ointments are also effective, as is smoking or vaporizing CBD-rich marijuana strains.
CBD functions by binding to cannabinoid receptors in the body’s endocannabinoid system. These receptors have been found in virtually every cell and tissue type in the human body.
CBD for pets is relatively new, but has proven itself as a serious medical benefit for animals. CBD is a natural, safe, effective, non-prescription treatment for pets. However, like vitamins, minerals and other supplements, CBD oil needs to be given to an animal in the correct dose.
